Pupils' Images on the Website

Our website is all about our school and (our) school is all about children. When we set up the website we wanted the site to be 'For the children - by the children'. We think that it is both exciting and memorable for children to see themselves and their classmates on the school website and that such a platform is very valuable for the children. However we are very aware of issues of safety and security surrounding school websites. To this end we have consulted a number of bodies and follow guidelines laid down by the Department for Education & Skills (as well as other organisations). These recommend that where children are named they are not shown in an accompanying photograph and where they are photographed, they are not named. Guidelines also recommend that surnames and other 'identifying information' is not used, that no individual photographs are published and that judgement is exercised when considering clothing & attire. All parents in the school have had these guidelines explained to them and only the children whose parents gave written consent are pictured on the site.

We have had many messages from schools asking how we 'get away' with using pupils' photographs. The answer: We work within the official guidelines and we only ever use photographs where parents have given consent. Children have a great sense of awe when they see themselves pictured on the school website. Although the safety issues of children using the internet are well publicised and well understood within school, we (& the parents who have given consent) realise the many great benefits of the children being visible on the pages of the website.
